Generation Rwanda
Generation Rwanda (GR) searches for the countries brightest students that can’t afford university, funds their education, and trains them to become leaders in Africa’s emerging information economy. GR wanted a video to show current and potential donors the importance of their work as well as how incredibly talented and special their students are. Since GR felt their existing material successfully communicated their general approach, they needed something more focused and personal to add depth to their messaging.
Together with GR, we decided to profile one student in the film, Josiane. By focusing on her story, the film gives donors a connection to the individual and a poignant reminder of the impact of GR’s work. We spent substantial time with Josiane to build the trust necessary to discuss sensitive topics, which were key to telling her story. The film takes the viewer on an emotional journey, getting to know what an extraordinary young woman Josiane is, understanding the challenges she has overcome to obtain an education and highlighting the empowering role GR has played in her life.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary
The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) is a community based conservation project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local community through tourism, education and the sustainable use of natural resources. KRS needed a video that would reflect their dual identity as both a non-profit conservation organization as well as an attractive tourist destination. The film would need to serve a variety of purposes and appeal to a wide range of audiences, from informing potential donors or partners of their conservation and education missions to enticing tour operators to include a stop at the sanctuary.
The abundant wildlife at KRS guarantees visitors will see a wide range of animals in their natural environment, but capturing special moments like the interaction between a baby rhino and his mother just days after he was born poses unique challenges. We worked closely with the knowledgeable rangers to ensure we knew when and where to get the best shots to show the spectacle of flora and fauna on display. To highlight the diversity of work being done at Khama, we included interviews from a variety of staff specialising in different areas. Interweaving these informative interviews with narration about visiting KRS ensured there was something to keep all audiences engaged throughout the video.
